The Macrocosms platform of the Montpellier European Ecotron is large control environment facility for ecosystem and community research housing 12 identical and independent experimental units. Each unit contains an aboveground dome of approximately 40 m3 (covered by a highly transparent fluorinated ethylene propylene film), where the atmospheric conditions are controlled. Designed to work with natural light, the platform can also be run under controlled light conditions. Under each dome, a belowground chamber hosts a large instrumented lysimeter (2 to 12 tonnes, soil depth up to 2m, canopy area 2, 4 or 5 m², canopy height up to 2m), and the machinery for the environmental controls. The facility is unique for permitting accurate simulations of wide range of environmental scenarios while simultaneously providing ecosystem-level measurements of CO2, H2O and CH4 fluxes, with flexibility to accommodate additional measurements.
